Exploring Meknes, Morocco: History, Heritage, and Hidden Gems

Meknes, one of Morocco's imperial cities, is a fascinating blend of history, culture, and charm. It’s an ideal 1-2 day trip. If you’re already in Fez, Meknes is well worth visiting for its relaxed atmosphere, stunning sites, and notably fewer scammers compared to its bustling neighbor.

I arrived in Meknes by train from Rabat, which was a smooth and scenic journey. Tickets can be purchased from the official Moroccan railway site, ONCF, and I highly recommend opting for first class. The price difference is minimal, but the comfort and tranquility of first class are well worth it—much less crowded and hectic than second class. Note that non high speed trains are older and do not have outlets for your electronics.

Once the capital of Morocco during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Meknes holds a unique place in the country’s history. Sultan Moulay Ismail unified Morocco and transformed Meknes into a magnificent capital, earning it the nickname "Versailles of Morocco." His grand vision left an enduring legacy in the city’s architectural marvels, fortified gates, and historic significance.

One of the city's highlights is the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the final resting place of the Sultan and his favorite wife. The mausoleum reflects the grandeur of Moroccan architecture, with its intricate tile work, ornate carvings, and serene courtyards. A collection of clocks gifted by Louis XIV adds a touch of intrigue, a memento of the Sultan's proposal to marry one of the French king’s daughters, which Louis politely declined. This sacred site is one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

The Dar Jamai Museum is another fascinating stop. Housed in a 19th-century palace, the museum features an impressive collection of Moroccan instruments. The highlight for me was the interactive audio and video exhibits showcasing Morocco’s diverse musical traditions, including Gnawa music, a genre I explored in my coverage of the Gnawa Music Festival in Essaouira. The museum’s vibrant displays bring Morocco’s musical heritage to life in a uniquely immersive way.

Another unexpected gem was the Berber and Jewish Art Gallery, a shop specializing in antiques and handicrafts. The owner, Mr. Mohammed Sidi, travels to the mountains where many Moroccan Jews reside to source rare items, creating a collection that’s both authentic and captivating. Don´t forget to haggle! The rule of thumb is divide the initial price by three.

A short drive from Meknes is Volubilis, one of North Africa’s best-preserved Roman ruins and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling through its ancient streets and admiring intricate mosaics offers a glimpse into the region’s Roman past, making it a must-see for history buffs.

For those seeking relaxation, I enjoyed a coffee break at Coffeeshopmeknes, a local favorite where a rich coffee with milk costs just 10 dirhams (about $1). It was the perfect pick-me-up during a day of exploration.

Lastly, Meknes has an unexpected modern twist with the Royal Golf Course, a 9-hole course located within the gardens of the Royal Palace. While access is reserved for members, the sight of cats roaming freely across the grounds added a charming touch to this unique attraction.

Though many sites are under renovation, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Dar Jamai Museum, and the nearby Volubilis are well worth the trip. Meknes’ blend of history, culture, and authenticity make it a destination that’s both enriching and enjoyable.
